Hans Wegner coffee table
This rare coffee table, model AT-10, was designed by Danish architect and designer Hans J. Wegner and produced by Andreas Tuck in Denmark during the 1950s. The table features a rectangular teak tabletop with softly rounded edges and a slightly raised lip along the perimeter, combining functional and decorative qualities. The tabletop rests on a sturdy oak frame with subtly tapered legs that provide a light, balanced aesthetic while ensuring stability.
A distinctive feature is the lower shelf, crafted from finely woven cane, which adds texture and warmth to the design while offering practical additional storage space. The interplay between the teak surface, oak frame, and cane detailing creates a refined yet organic expression characteristic of Scandinavian modern design, emphasizing craftsmanship and natural materials.
Hans Wegner was a seminal figure in Scandinavian modernism, celebrated for his mastery of organic forms, exceptional craftsmanship, and the seamless integration of diverse materials. His designs often showcase exposed joinery and elegant simplicity, achieving visual harmony and lasting durability. Andreas Tuck, the manufacturer, was known for their precise woodworking and high-quality production, making this table a distinguished example of their collaboration.
The table measures 160.5 cm in width, 50.5 cm in depth, and 50.5 cm in height (63.2 by 19.9 by 19.9 inches). It remains in original condition, with natural aging evident in the cane and a patina on the wood surfaces, consistent with careful use over time. This piece embodies the mid-century Danish ethos of functionality combined with timeless elegance.
