Hans Wegner shelf
This wall-mounted shelf was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Ry Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. Crafted from solid oak, the shelf exemplifies Wegner’s commitment to structural clarity, functional simplicity, and meticulous woodworking.
The design consists of a horizontal oak plank supported by three angular vertical brackets. Each bracket features a distinctive tapering cut that angles upward and backward, creating a geometric profile that is both minimal and visually striking. A horizontal rear rail connects the tops of the brackets, reinforcing the structure and facilitating secure wall mounting. The oak displays a warm golden-brown hue with visible grain patterns and a natural matte finish.
The shelf is in very good condition, exhibiting light wear consistent with age, including minor surface marks and softened edges typical of mid-century craftsmanship. The construction remains solid, and the shelf retains its original dimensions and mounting hardware.
Hans Wegner (1914–2007) was a seminal figure in Danish modern design. While best known for his iconic chair designs, his broader portfolio includes refined furniture pieces that demonstrate his precise craftsmanship and design logic. His collaboration with Ry Møbler during the 1950s and 60s produced a number of storage and shelving units that echo the elegance and quality of his seating designs.
Ry Møbler was a respected Danish cabinetmaker and furniture producer closely associated with Wegner, known for high-quality woodwork and minimalist, utilitarian forms, often in oak and teak.
The shelf measures 100 cm wide, 18.5 cm deep, and 23.5 cm high, approximately 39.4 inches wide, 7.3 inches deep, and 9.3 inches high.
