Hans Wegner sideboard
This rare sideboard, model CH-304, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark during the 1950s. It is a distinctive example of Scandinavian modern design, combining high-function cabinetry with elegant craftsmanship and sculptural structural detailing. Executed in a combination of teak for the case, beech for the base, and brass for the supporting braces, the piece reflects Wegner’s ethos of honest construction, material clarity, and formal refinement.
The upper cabinetry is composed of a rectangular teak case divided into three functional sections. On the left side, there are six drawers, each constructed with visible dovetail joinery and fitted with round solid wood knobs. The center and right compartments feature sliding doors with recessed pulls, revealing adjustable shelving and a series of pull-out trays crafted in light wood. The trays are shaped with half-moon openings for ease of use, highlighting both utility and aesthetic precision. The sliding door arrangement allows for a flexible display and storage configuration, suitable for use in living, dining, or study environments.
The sideboard is elevated on a sculptural beech base, characterized by outwardly curved X-shaped legs, which are joined by a brass stretcher for both structural stability and visual rhythm. This combination of sweeping organic lines and finely tuned detailing exemplifies Wegner’s ability to merge the organic with the architectural, and utilitarian requirements with sculptural elegance.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most prolific and influential designers of the Danish modern movement. His work is known for its thoughtful balance of form and function, where every element serves both structural and aesthetic purposes. Wegner collaborated with Carl Hansen & Søn on numerous landmark designs, many of which remain in continuous production.
This piece remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of usage and a rich, even patina to the teak and beech surfaces. The brass elements show a subtle aged tone consistent with the era. All drawers and sliding doors function smoothly and the construction remains fully stable.
The dimensions of the sideboard are 168 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 126 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 66.1 inches wide, 17.7 inches deep, and 49.6 inches high. The CH-304 sideboard stands as a rare and architecturally expressive example of mid-century Scandinavian cabinetry, both in its visual composition and technical execution.
