Hans Wegner stools
The stools JH-539 are designed by Hans Wegner and produced by the renowned Danish cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in 1954. These stools are made from teak wood, a material well-known for its durability and rich coloring, combined with woven cane for the seat. This combination of materials creates a visually appealing contrast, with the smooth, dark tones of the teak complementing the natural, light tones of the cane.
The design of the stools is minimalist and elegant, characteristic of Wegner’s approach to Danish Modern design. The seats are crafted from woven cane, showcasing traditional craftsmanship, while the frame is simple yet sturdy, with elegantly tapered legs and curved side handles. The subtle, organic lines of the stool reflect the functional beauty that Wegner is celebrated for. The woven cane seat offers comfort and flexibility, enhancing the stool’s practicality while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.
This particular model was first showcased at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ 400th anniversary exhibition in 1954, highlighting its importance within the Danish design scene. The stool’s design represents a key moment in Danish modernist history, blending innovation with traditional craftsmanship. The piece has been well-preserved over the years, with a warm patina that has developed on the wood, enhancing its character. However, the woven cane seat does show minor signs of wear, which is consistent with its age and adds to the authenticity and charm of the piece.
In terms of dimensions, the stool measures 67 cm in width, 38 cm in depth, and stands 45 cm tall. The seat height is 40.5 cm, making it suitable for use as an occasional stool or as part of a larger seating arrangement.
