Information

This rare set of sixteen dining chairs, model 61, was designed by Harry Østergaard and produced by Randers Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1961. The set exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and timeless elegance characteristic of Scandinavian modern design from this period. Each chair features a frame constructed from richly grained rosewood, a material prized for both its durability and its warm, organic aesthetic. The design incorporates smooth, flowing curves and meticulous joinery, reflecting the skillful woodworking traditions of Danish furniture makers.

The backrests are defined by a gently curved top rail that creates an open and visually light structure while providing effective ergonomic support. This detail enhances the chair’s sculptural quality and emphasizes the balance between form and function central to Scandinavian design philosophy. The seats preserve their original black leather upholstery, which remains in good condition with a soft sheen. This upholstery contrasts subtly yet strikingly with the dark rosewood, highlighting the interplay between natural and refined materials.

Ergonomically, the chairs are shaped for comfort, with a slightly angled backrest and subtly contoured seat that encourages relaxed seating posture. Each chair bears the Illums Bolighus stamp, a mark of quality associated with the esteemed Danish retailer known for promoting exceptional design and craftsmanship. The presence of this label confirms the chairs’ provenance and their standing within Danish design heritage.

Measuring 50 by 50 centimeters in width and depth, with a height of 76.5 centimeters (19.7 x 19.7 x 30.1 inches), and a seat height of 43 centimeters (16.9 inches), these chairs offer both aesthetic presence and practical comfort. The preservation of this large set in such a cohesive and well-maintained condition is exceptionally rare, making it a significant representation of mid-century Danish furniture design.
