Helge Vestergaard Jensen dining table
This very rare dining table was designed by Danish architect Helge Vestergaard Jensen and produced by master cabinetmaker Peder Pedersen in Denmark in 1958. The design reflects Jensen’s architectural background and his dedication to craftsmanship and structural clarity, evident in the table’s precise detailing and refined use of materials.
The tabletop is circular in its standard form, measuring 130 cm (51.2 inches) in diameter, and expands into an elongated oval when fitted with four extension leaves, reaching a length of 310 cm (122 inches). Both the frame and top are crafted from solid teak, exhibiting warm golden-brown tones and a soft, natural grain pattern. The tapered, slightly splayed legs integrate seamlessly with the underframe through precise joinery, while the tabletop’s subtly curved edges emphasize the natural texture and simplicity of the wood.
A distinctive feature of the table is its brass stretcher system, composed of slender V-shaped anodized brass supports. These braces add structural stability and introduce a dynamic, architectural contrast to the organic warmth of the teak. The interplay between the brass elements and the wood enhances the table’s sculptural and minimalist character.
The table is in very good condition, showing light age-related patina and minor surface wear on both the brass and wood. The extension mechanism operates smoothly and the piece maintains its original integrity and aesthetic.
Helge Vestergaard Jensen was known for combining functional precision with elegant, minimalist design, marked by clean geometry and meticulous joinery. The production by Peder Pedersen, renowned for high-quality craftsmanship, underscores the close collaborations between architects and cabinetmakers during the height of Danish modernism.
