Helge Vestergaard Jensen dining table
This dining table was designed by Helge Vestergaard Jensen and produced by cabinetmaker Peder Pedersen in Denmark in 1958. It represents a highly refined example of Danish mid-century furniture design, combining sculptural woodworking with a restrained structural logic characteristic of Jensen’s work from the period.
The table is executed in rosewood, selected for its dense structure and pronounced grain. The tabletop is composed with carefully matched veneer panels, creating a calm yet expressive surface with natural tonal variation ranging from deep brown to warmer reddish hues. The softly rounded rectangular form is balanced by a subtly profiled edge that visually lightens the mass of the top. When extended, the table retains its proportions and coherence, with the extension leaves integrating seamlessly into the overall design.
The base consists of elegantly tapered solid rosewood legs, each shaped with a distinctive inner cut that creates a light, almost architectural silhouette. These legs are connected by slender blackened metal stretchers, providing structural stability while introducing a contrasting linear element. The interplay between the organic wooden forms and the precise metal components is a defining feature of the design and reflects Jensen’s background as both an architect and furniture designer.
The table is in excellent vintage condition and has been completely restored. The wood surfaces have been carefully refinished, preserving the original character and grain while ensuring structural integrity and usability. Minor signs of age are consistent with the period and do not detract from the overall presentation.
Helge Vestergaard Jensen is known for his limited but highly regarded production, and pieces by him are considered rare. Tables produced by Peder Pedersen are particularly sought after due to the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
