Helge Vestergaard Jensen lounge chair
This exceptionally rare lounge chair was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Helge Vestergaard Jensen and produced by master cabinetmaker Peder Pedersen in Denmark during the 1950s. Believed to be a unique piece, it exemplifies bespoke craftsmanship combined with an experimental structural language rooted in postwar Scandinavian modernism.
The frame is crafted from solid oak, exhibiting a rich warm-brown tone and distinctive grain pattern. The construction is angular and sculptural, featuring a striking triangular geometry formed by the rear legs and arm supports. The rear support extends diagonally from the floor to the backrest in a continuous, unbroken line, adding both structural strength and visual dynamism. The forward-leaning seat and low reclining posture are designed to cradle the body comfortably in a relaxed, almost horizontal position.
The seat and backrest consist of tightly stretched nylon cords woven in parallel across the wooden frame, inset into continuous rows of ebony dowels. These ebony details create a striking contrast against the lighter oak, framing the tensioned cords with a refined graphic rhythm. The cordwork remains uniformly taut and is threaded through precisely spaced apertures, underscoring the high level of cabinetmaking skill and functional engineering involved.
The chair is in excellent condition, with carefully preserved wood surfaces showing minimal wear. The oak structure is stable with a well-maintained, even finish. The nylon cords are clean and intact without any fraying or discoloration. The ebony accents are undamaged, elegantly contrasting with the oak grain.
This chair stands as a testament to the Danish cabinetmaking tradition, where individually crafted pieces were often realized through close collaboration between designer and maker.
The dimensions are 165 cm in depth, 70 cm in width, and 77.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 22 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 65 inches deep, 27.6 inches wide, 30.5 inches high, and a seat height of 8.7 inches.
