Henning Kjærnulf dining chairs
This is a rare set of six model 255 dining chairs designed by Danish architect Henning Kjærnulf and produced by Bruno Hansen in Denmark during the 1950s. The chairs exemplify Scandinavian mid-century values through their balanced use of natural materials, tactile craftsmanship, and sculptural simplicity. The frames are crafted from a combination of solid oak and teak, creating a visual contrast between the golden oak legs and the darker, rich tone of the curved teak backrest. The wood displays a warm patina with natural grain patterns clearly visible, testifying to its age and authenticity.
The defining feature of the model 255 is the dynamic V-shaped back support design, which creates both structural reinforcement and a visual rhythm that ties the curved top rail to the lower frame. The backrest is steam-bent teak, gently arched to follow the contour of the spine, while the front legs are subtly tapered, contributing to the lightness and clarity of form. The seat has been reupholstered in a finely woven wool fabric in a neutral light beige tone, providing updated comfort while respecting the period character.
Henning Kjærnulf (1920–2003) was a Danish architect and furniture designer known for combining traditional Danish cabinetmaking with modernist principles. His works often integrate ornamental gestures with disciplined forms, as seen in the sculptural yet restrained lines of this chair model. Kjærnulf’s contributions to Danish design are noted for their artisanal rigor and material honesty.
Bruno Hansen, the producer, was known for high-quality craftsmanship and close collaborations with several Danish designers during the mid-century era. His workshop produced a limited series of well-executed furniture pieces, often marked with the designer’s and maker’s stamps, as seen in this set.
The condition is good vintage, with minor signs of usage in the wood surfaces and joints, consistent with their age. The upholstery has been newly replaced, while the structural integrity and original finish have been retained and preserved.
Each chair measures 54 cm in width (21.3 inches), 49 cm in depth (19.3 inches), and 74 cm in height (29.1 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches). The set offers a rare opportunity to acquire a cohesive group of expressive yet understated chairs, suitable for a dining setting that values both craftsmanship and comfort within a mid-century Scandinavian context.
