Henning Kjærnulf

Henning Kjærnulf (1911–1975) was a Danish furniture designer and architect active during the mid-20th century. His work is characterized by a distinct combination of traditional craftsmanship and more expressive, often architectural detailing within the framework of Danish modern design.

Biography

Kjærnulf began his career working with several Danish manufacturers, including Bruno Hansen, Poul Hundevad, and Vejen Møbelfabrik. His designs reflect a balance between functional clarity and a more decorative approach than many of his contemporaries, often incorporating carved elements and sculptural forms.

Among his best-known works are dining chairs and tables produced by Bruno Hansen, where solid wood construction and detailed joinery play a central role. His use of natural materials such as oak, combined with pronounced structural features, gives his pieces a distinctive presence within the Danish modern tradition.

Kjærnulf’s work stands apart through its blend of restraint and ornament, bridging traditional cabinetmaking with a more expressive interpretation of mid-century design. His furniture continues to be appreciated for its craftsmanship, material quality, and recognizable formal language.
