Holger Johansson ceiling lamp
This rare and large ceiling lamp was designed by Holger Johansson and produced by Westal in Sweden in 1952. The fixture is constructed from brass, which lends it a warm golden tone that naturally develops a patina over time. The design features a modular arrangement of hand-blown glass shades, each softly rounded to diffuse light evenly, resulting in balanced and pleasant illumination.
Architecturally, the chandelier is composed of brass arms symmetrically extending from a central column, with each arm supporting a transparent glass shade. This arrangement exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian modernism, focusing on functionality, the use of quality materials, and an elegant yet understated visual presence.
Holger Johansson was noted for his innovative lighting designs, skillfully combining brass and glass to highlight both structural form and light diffusion. Westal, the manufacturer, was a leading Swedish producer of premium lighting fixtures, known for its craftsmanship and technical expertise.
The lamp features an adjustable suspension system allowing its height to extend up to 4.2 meters, making it adaptable for large, open interiors and high-ceilinged spaces. It remains in good vintage condition, exhibiting minor wear consistent with its age.
The dimensions are 80 cm in diameter and 70 cm in height (31.5 x 27.6 inches), extendable up to a total height of 420 cm (165.4 inches).
