Holger Johansson
Holger Johansson (1926–2015) was a Swedish lighting manufacturer and entrepreneur, best known as the founder of Westal. He established the company in 1947 under the name Habo Elarmatur, laying the foundation for one of Sweden’s longstanding producers of lighting fixtures.
Biography
Johansson began working with lighting production in Småland during the 1940s, initially focusing on functional and decorative fixtures for domestic interiors. In 1947, he founded Habo Elarmatur in Habo, later developing the company into Westal, which became known for its consistent production of practical, well-crafted lighting solutions.
By the late 1960s, the company had grown significantly, leading to the construction of a new factory in Bankeryd in 1968. From this base, Westal expanded its production while maintaining a focus on durability, functionality, and straightforward design.
Johansson’s work is best understood within the broader context of Swedish mid-century lighting production, where industrial efficiency and functional design were prioritized over individual authorship. His legacy remains closely tied to the continued presence of Westal within Swedish lighting manufacturing.
