Illum Wikkelsø easy chairs

The Venus easy chair, designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by CFC Silkeborg in Denmark in 1972, is a rare exemplar of Scandinavian mid-century design. Crafted from solid rosewood, the chair boasts a sculptural frame that showcases the wood’s rich, dark grain and precise joinery. Its backrest is composed of horizontal slats, which provide both structural strength and a refined visual rhythm.

The chair retains its original muted green upholstery, harmonizing with the natural tones of the rosewood. The generously padded cushions feature button tufting, adding both comfort and tactile detail. The seat and backrest are slightly angled to enhance ergonomics, while the broad armrests extend outward, emphasizing the chair’s organic form. The exposed frame and floating seat design are signature elements of Wikkelsø’s furniture philosophy, emphasizing structural clarity and sculptural grace.

Illum Wikkelsø was a prominent figure in Danish modernism, celebrated for his elegant and functional furniture that married natural materials with skilled craftsmanship.
