Ilmari Tapiovaara bookcase
This very rare and large freestanding bookcase was designed by Finnish architect and designer Ilmari Tapiovaara and produced by La Permanente Mobili in Cantù, Italy, between 1957 and 1958. The structure is composed of a modular system of vertical and horizontal elements crafted from solid teak with veneered surfaces. These components are joined using visible brass pins, allowing assembly without mechanical fasteners. The modular design incorporates lacquered sliding panels in black and white, which add a rhythmic, geometric visual dynamic while providing the option to enclose selected compartments.
The overall form presents a rectilinear and architectural silhouette, reflecting Tapiovaara’s functionalist principles and precise attention to proportion and spatial organization. This shelving unit balances sculptural presence with practical utility, embodying Scandinavian design values realized through Italian craftsmanship. The combination of natural teak, brass detailing, and contrasting monochrome lacquer panels creates a harmonious formal balance and a rich material palette.
Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) was a central figure in 20th-century Scandinavian design, celebrated for his commitment to democratic design, material integrity, and functional elegance. While best known for Finnish classics such as the Domus and Fanett chairs, this collaboration with La Permanente Mobili exemplifies his international reach and ability to adapt to varied production contexts. The project was connected to the “Selettiva” exhibitions in Cantù—prominent design competitions in post-war Italy that fostered innovation and collaboration. These works were documented in Domus magazine during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The bookcase is in very good vintage condition, showing signs of careful use and well-preserved finishes. The brass connectors exhibit minor patina consistent with age, and the sliding panels retain their original lacquer with only light surface wear.
The dimensions are 415 centimeters in width, 34 centimeters in depth, and 203 centimeters in height (approximately 163.4 x 13.4 x 79.9 inches).
