Ivar Ålenius-Björk candlesticks
This set of four brass candlesticks, model Lily (Liljan), was designed by Ivar Ålenius-Björk and produced by Ystad-Metall in Sweden. Ålenius-Björk, who worked as a sculptor and designer, created the Liljan model in 1939 for the Swedish pavilion at the New York World’s Fair. The design has since become one of the most recognizable symbols of Scandinavian modern metalwork, combining organic form with balanced simplicity.
Each candlestick is formed from two symmetrical brass arcs that rise from a circular base and curve outward like the petals of a lily, giving the model its name. The smooth curvature and polished surfaces reflect light elegantly, emphasizing the form’s sculptural quality. The candlesticks can be used individually or grouped together, where the rhythm of their repeated shapes creates a striking visual arrangement. The design expresses the harmony between craftsmanship and industrial production typical of mid-20th-century Swedish design.
These examples are in good vintage condition with visible traces of age and use. The brass surfaces display a natural patina and minor surface marks consistent with age, enhancing the material’s warm tone and historical character.
