Information

This very rare floor lamp was designed by J.T. Kalmar and produced by his renowned lighting company J.T. Kalmar in Austria during the 1950s. It is a striking example of post-war Austrian modernism, combining refined materiality with a sculptural yet highly functional form. The lamp features a height-adjustable structure, allowing the light source to be positioned according to different spatial and functional needs, a detail that reflects the mid-century emphasis on versatility and user-oriented design.

The piece is constructed from a sophisticated mix of materials. The main structure is crafted in teak, lending a warm, natural tone that contrasts with the cool, polished brass details. The conical shade is made from animal skin with a stitched leather edge, which gives the lamp a unique texture and a warm, diffused light when illuminated. The heavy base ensures stability while adding a sense of visual balance to the tall, slender profile of the lamp.

J.T. Kalmar was one of Austria’s most prominent lighting designers and manufacturers of the 20th century, known for merging traditional craftsmanship with modernist principles. His works were often defined by a subtle interplay of materials and elegant proportions, and this lamp is an excellent representation of that approach. It remains in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of use, preserving its original patina and character.

Dimensions are 33 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and 154.5 cm high (13 x 23.6 x 60.8 in)
