Information

Rare bronze box designed by Jacob Ängman in 1935 and produced by GAB (Guldsmedsaktiebolaget), Sweden. The restrained rectangular vessel is surmounted by a sculptural lion finial, creating a striking contrast between the box’s simple geometric form and the expressive animal figure.

Executed entirely in bronze, the box has softly rounded corners and an understated, almost architectural body. Its removable lid is crowned by a recumbent lion, modelled with a raised head, prominently articulated mane and curling tail. The stylised treatment of the animal, balancing naturalistic details with simplified volumes, gives the piece a distinctly decorative character associated with Swedish design of the interwar period.

Jacob Ängman (1876–1942) was an important Swedish designer and silversmith whose work played a significant role in the development of Swedish decorative arts during the first decades of the twentieth century. He became particularly associated with Guldsmedsaktiebolaget, commonly known as GAB, where he served as artistic director for many years. His designs encompassed silver, metalwork and objects for the domestic interior, ranging from restrained functional pieces to more sculptural works incorporating figurative and ornamental motifs.

Designed in 1935, this box belongs to a period in which Swedish decorative arts increasingly combined the refinement of earlier classical traditions with the simplified forms of emerging Scandinavian modernism. The compact geometry of the container is notably modern, while the sculptural lion introduces a more symbolic and ornamental element. This juxtaposition gives the object a strong presence despite its relatively small scale.

The bronze has developed a rich, naturally varied patina, ranging from deep brown to areas of green oxidation, particularly around the lion and across the lid. These tonal variations accentuate the modelling of the sculpture and contribute considerably to the character of the piece.

A rare and highly decorative example of Ängman’s work for GAB, equally suited as a functional box or as a small sculptural object.

Good vintage condition with small signs of use and naturally developed patina consistent with age.
