Jan Lunde Knudsen sideboard
This very rare freestanding sideboard, model INFI, designed by Jan Lunde Knudsen and produced by Gunnar Sørlie in Norway during the 1960s, is a distinctive example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design that artfully merges natural warmth with industrial elements.
The cabinet is veneered in highly figured rosewood, showcasing symmetrical and striking grain patterns across its four front doors, which add a dynamic visual appeal to the piece. Its structure is elevated on a chromed steel base, lending the sideboard a sense of lightness and modern contrast to the rich wood. The base itself is composed of clean, linear steel legs forming an architectural framework, underscoring the design’s modernist roots.
Jan Lunde Knudsen’s design philosophy emphasizes minimalism, functionality, and craftsmanship, all evident in this sideboard’s precise joinery, balanced proportions, and material integrity. Gunnar Sørlie’s production quality complements the design, ensuring a finely executed final product.
The sideboard remains in original condition, with minor wear typical of age. The rosewood surface has developed a deep, warm patina that enhances the natural character of the wood, while the chromed steel legs maintain their original finish, showing only slight oxidation consistent with vintage metal.
