Jens Quistgaard attrib. coaster plates
This set of ten coaster plates, attributed to Jens Quistgaard and produced in Denmark during the 1950s, showcases exemplary Scandinavian mid-century craftsmanship in small-scale domestic design. Each plate is crafted from solid rosewood, expertly turned and shaped to a consistent profile that highlights the natural, rich character of the wood while maintaining uniformity across the set.
With a diameter of 27.5 cm (approximately 10.8 inches) and a height of 2 cm (about 0.8 inches), the plates feature a shallow, gently recessed center framed by a subtle upward-curving lip, making them versatile as serving platters, charger plates, or large coasters for carafes and bowls.
The rosewood exhibits a dramatic and varied grain pattern, with concentric laminated stripes flowing across the surface in deep brown, black, and reddish hues characteristic of old-growth rosewood. The precision of the lamination and turning process is evident in the smooth, polished finish, creating a striking visual rhythm and a tactilely satisfying surface.
On the underside, the plates bear a partially legible maker’s mark consistent with Danish producers linked to Quistgaard’s oeuvre. One plate retains a vintage Illums Bolighus retailer’s sticker, connecting this set to Copenhagen’s premier design retail tradition known for curating the finest Danish modern objects.
Jens Quistgaard (1919–2008) was a seminal figure in Danish design, celebrated for blending artisanal tradition with industrial production in tableware and home accessories. This set epitomizes his philosophy of marrying functional clarity with sculptural elegance, reflecting a commitment to material integrity and user experience.
The plates are in good vintage condition, showing minor surface wear typical of age and use, without any visible cracks or structural damage, preserving their aesthetic and functional appeal.
