Jens Quistgaard cutting board
This is a rare mid-century cutting board for meat designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard and produced by Dansk Designs in Denmark during the 1950s. The form is circular with a wide rim, slightly raised on a central pedestal base, lending the piece both sculptural presence and practical elevation from the surface below. The upper surface showcases an intricate end-grain composition in wengé, framed by a solid teak rim. This construction technique enhances both the visual texture and the functional durability of the board, particularly suited for heavy-duty carving.
The combination of teak and wengé wood provides a rich tonal contrast. The teak displays a warm reddish-brown hue with fine grain variation, while the wengé in the center exhibits deeper brown tones with expressive, interlocking grain patterns. The meticulous workmanship in the end-grain arrangement of the central panel reflects an artisanal approach to surface construction, commonly seen in Quistgaard’s woodenware from this period.
Jens Quistgaard (1919–2008) was a Danish designer best known for his work with Dansk Designs, where he became the creative force behind a wide array of tableware, kitchen utensils, and wooden objects that bridged Scandinavian tradition and modern functionality. His approach often merged handcraft aesthetics with industrial production, and his wooden designs are particularly celebrated for their tactile appeal, material integrity, and enduring form.
Dansk Designs was established in the 1950s with the goal of bringing Scandinavian modern design to the American market. The collaboration between Quistgaard and Dansk led to the production of iconic kitchen and tabletop items that became emblematic of mid-century modern living.
The cutting board is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and a well-developed surface patina. Minor surface marks are consistent with age and use but do not affect structural integrity. The wood has retained its natural oils and sheen, indicating careful use and maintenance over time.
The dimensions are 39.5 cm in diameter and 4.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 15.6 inches wide by 1.8 inches high. The proportions, wood selection, and design integrity make this piece a notable example of Scandinavian mid-century design in functional objects.
