Information

This floor lamp is the model Trombone, designed by Danish lighting designer Jo Hammerborg and produced by Fog & Mørup during the 1960s. The lamp exemplifies Hammerborg’s rigorous modernist aesthetic, where form is reduced to essential geometries while preserving visual tension through material contrasts and subtle detailing. Hammerborg, a former silversmith and long-time head of design at Fog & Mørup, was instrumental in shaping Denmark’s mid-century lighting design language through his focus on functionally integrated elegance.

The Trombone model features a cylindrical brass shade, precision-perforated with linear slits along both ends. These perforations serve both as visual accents and heat vents. The shade is suspended between two vertical brass rods and is mounted on a pivot mechanism, allowing the user to adjust the angle of illumination with precision. The shade interior is lacquered black to reduce glare and concentrate light directionally. The minimal brass construction is complemented by a dark lacquered square base that visually anchors the vertical structure.

The architectural layout of the lamp is based on repetition and alignment. The two uprights are connected with a horizontal brace halfway up the structure, reinforcing the overall stability and echoing the symmetry of the mounted cylinder. When illuminated, the perforated ends of the shade cast a patterned light effect, producing a signature atmospheric quality distinctive to Hammerborg’s work.

Produced by Fog & Mørup, one of Denmark’s most prominent lighting manufacturers of the 20th century, the Trombone lamp reflects the company’s peak production period when collaborations with leading designers yielded numerous international design icons.

This example is in good vintage condition with light signs of wear. The brass surface has a warm aged tone, and the lacquered base retains its finish with minor signs of use. The pivot mechanism and electrical function remain intact.

The lamp measures 137 cm in height, 29 cm in depth, and 20 cm in width, corresponding to approximately 53.9 inches high, 11.4 inches deep, and 7.9 inches wide.
