Jo Hammerborg floor lamps

This rare pair of floor lamps, model Studio, was designed by Jo Hammerborg and produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark during the 1950s. The lamps feature a distinctive adjustable cylindrical shade constructed in two parts: the lower section is finished in black lacquered metal, while the upper section consists of untreated copper. This shade is mounted on a horizontal arm that pivots from a vertical black lacquered stem, creating a functional and dynamic form. Each lamp is supported by a circular base, providing stability and a clean silhouette.

The combination of matte black metal and warm copper reflects the refined minimalism characteristic of mid-century Danish lighting design. The light source is recessed within the cylindrical head and is partially diffused by a white inner reflector, producing a focused beam with softly softened edges. This configuration makes the lamps particularly suited for tasks requiring directed light, such as reading, or as accent lighting in interior spaces.

Jo Hammerborg, originally trained as a silversmith and having worked as a lighting designer for Royal Copenhagen, became head of design at Fog & Mørup in 1957. He played a crucial role in elevating the company to a leading position in Scandinavian lighting production. Hammerborg’s work is noted for its precise execution, functional design, and the successful integration of modernist principles with expert craftsmanship.

These lamps are preserved in good vintage condition, exhibiting light patina on the copper components and minor wear on the lacquered surfaces consistent with their age. The dimensions of each lamp are 15 centimeters in width, 40 centimeters in depth, and 150 centimeters in height (5.9 inches W x 15.7 inches D x 59.1 inches H).
