Information

This is a rare table lamp, model “Senior” designed by Jo Hammerborg and produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed from a combination of teak wood, brass, and painted metal, with dual internal glass shades that diffuse the light. Its design demonstrates Hammerborg’s commitment to modern functionalism and harmonious material combinations typical of Scandinavian mid-century lighting.

The lamp features a sharply conical shade in dark purple-colored glass with a satin finish, slightly flared at the bottom and finished with a small cylindrical finial at the top. The other shade is made of opaline glass to enhance light reflection. The stem is composed of turned teak with a central brass sleeve, creating a refined contrast between the warm wood grain and the polished metal surface. The lamp rests on a three-pointed brass base, anchored with small teak feet, contributing to its material balance and structural integrity.

It measures 46 cm in height and 34 cm in diameter (18.11 inches high by 13.39 inches in diameter). The condition is good vintage with minor signs of use such as small surface marks on the base and shade, consistent with age and careful handling.

Jo Hammerborg (1920–1982) was a Danish designer and head of design at Fog & Mørup from 1957 through the early 1980s. A former silversmith at Georg Jensen, Hammerborg applied his understanding of proportion, balance, and material to lighting design. His works are characterized by minimal ornamentation, advanced construction methods, and an emphasis on light quality and form integration.

Fog & Mørup, founded in the early 20th century, became one of Denmark’s most influential lighting manufacturers. Under Hammerborg’s direction, the company’s output evolved into some of the most celebrated Scandinavian lighting designs of the era.
