Jonas Bohlin cabinet
Slottsbacken cabinet designed by Jonas Bohlin and produced by Källemo, Sweden, in 1987. This example is numbered 193/200 from the standard production edition of 200 pieces. According to the original manufacturer’s label, the model was produced in an edition of 200 numbered examples (1/200–200/200) together with 10 signed examples (I/X–X/X). Slottsbacken is among Jonas Bohlin’s most significant early works and represents an important contribution to late twentieth-century Swedish design, combining industrial construction methods with a sculptural architectural expression.
The cabinet is constructed from oxidized iron sheet panels mounted within a blackened steel framework, combined with an oak veneered carcass and glass shelving. The exterior is characterized by six rectangular iron-clad door panels arranged in a strict geometric grid. Visible fasteners, exposed steel profiles, and untreated industrial surfaces form an integral part of the design language. The iron has developed a varied patina displaying warm brown, reddish-brown, and grey tones, with naturally occurring surface variations, oxidation marks, and traces of handling that contribute to the cabinet’s distinctive material character.
The interior contrasts the rugged exterior through the use of warm oak surfaces and transparent glass shelves supported by black metal rails. The composition reflects Bohlin’s recurring interest in the relationship between raw and refined materials, where industrial metals are juxtaposed with natural wood and precise craftsmanship. The tall and narrow proportions emphasize the cabinet’s architectural presence while providing practical storage and display functionality.
Jonas Bohlin (born 1953) is one of Sweden’s most influential contemporary designers and architects. Following his breakthrough with the celebrated Concrete chair of 1981, Bohlin became known for challenging conventional distinctions between art, architecture, and furniture design. His work often explores the expressive potential of construction materials and structural honesty, resulting in objects that occupy a space between functional design and sculptural form. Slottsbacken belongs to this important period in Bohlin’s oeuvre and is regarded as one of the key examples of Swedish postmodern and industrial design from the 1980s.
Founded in Värnamo in 1973, Källemo established itself as one of Sweden’s most progressive furniture manufacturers through collaborations with leading designers including Jonas Bohlin, Mats Theselius, Åke Axelsson, and Gunilla Allard. Under the direction of Sven Lundh, Källemo became internationally recognized for producing limited-edition furniture characterized by experimental materials, exceptional craftsmanship, and a strong emphasis on artistic integrity. The Slottsbacken cabinet exemplifies this philosophy through its unconventional material palette and limited production.
The cabinet presents in good vintage condition. The iron surfaces display expected age-related oxidation, patination, scratches, handling marks, and surface irregularities consistent with the original material and intended aesthetic. The oak structure and glass shelves remain in good condition with minor signs of use commensurate with age. The cabinet retains its original manufacturer’s label and edition number.
