Jonas Bohlin cabinet Slottsbacken
This rare “Slottsbacken” cabinet was designed by Jonas Bohlin and produced by Källemo in Sweden in 1987. Crafted from stained oak and riveted iron with glass shelves, this piece is part of a limited edition of 200, with this example numbered 71. The cabinet embodies a striking industrial aesthetic, featuring a patinated oak exterior that contrasts with the warm natural wood interior.
The cabinet’s doors consist of riveted iron panels that display a naturally aged surface, imparting a raw, weathered character. Enclosed within a robust metal frame, the finely crafted oak interior is fitted with glass shelves. The hinges are discreetly integrated into the iron framework, preserving the minimalist and utilitarian design language.
Jonas Bohlin, a Swedish interior architect and designer born in Stockholm, is renowned for his experimental and boundary-pushing approach. A graduate and later professor at Konstfack, his 1981 “Concrete” chair challenged traditional design norms by combining steel and concrete, sparking debate on the line between art and design. Throughout his career, Bohlin has balanced rational function with emotional expression, often questioning conventional aesthetics.
Källemo is a Swedish manufacturer known for producing high-quality, concept-driven furniture that explores innovative materials and design philosophies. The collaboration with Bohlin on the “Slottsbacken” cabinet exemplifies this ethos, merging industrial materials with refined craftsmanship.
The cabinet is in very good vintage condition, showing natural patina and oxidation on the iron surfaces consistent with the designer’s intended aesthetic.
