Jørgen Høj dining chairs

This rare set of four dining chairs was designed by Jørgen Høj and produced by the master cabinetmaker Thorvald Madsens Snedkeri in Copenhagen, Denmark. The model was presented at the prestigious Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1951, a showcase known for introducing some of the most refined examples of Danish modern craftsmanship. The set originates from the Thorvald Madsen family collection, adding provenance and historical significance to the ensemble.

The chairs are constructed from solid oak with seats and backs woven in natural cane. The frame design is characterized by its organic simplicity and precise joinery, where each component contributes to both structural integrity and visual lightness. The curved seat and backrest create a continuous surface that provides comfort while maintaining a disciplined geometry. The slender, tapered legs and the horizontal stretchers reinforce stability without compromising the chair’s graceful silhouette.

Jørgen Høj, active in the mid-20th century, was among the Danish designers who bridged cabinetmaking tradition with functional modern aesthetics. His work reflects the Danish ethos of craftsmanship—where form follows function, and materials are treated with deep respect for their natural properties. The collaboration with Thorvald Madsens Snedkeri ensured that each piece was executed to the highest artisanal standard.

The chairs remain in good vintage condition with a warm patina and signs of age consistent with careful use. The woven cane retains its structural integrity and rich coloration, complementing the honey tone of the oak frame.
