Josef Frank attrib. mirror
This is a rare rectangular mirror in rattan, attributed to Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s.
The mirror features a sculptural frame crafted from natural rattan, forming an undulating, softly contoured profile. The rattan is finely woven with a consistent rhythm and rounded edges, creating an impression of solidity and lightness. The curvature of the frame echoes both functional and decorative modernist sensibilities, in line with Josef Frank’s organic design language.
The glass is inset with a beveled transition along the inner edge. There are visible age-related signs on the mirror plate, most notably a concentrated cluster of oxidation at the top. The rear construction and curvature are consistent with Svenskt Tenn’s known production techniques from the era. This particular model is documented in photographic archives at Svenskt Tenn.
Dimensions: Height 71 cm, width 60 cm, depth 8.5 cm (27.95 x 23.62 x 3.35 in).
Good condition overall with localized deterioration to the mirror glass.
This example represents a rare survival of mid-century rattan work attributed to one of Sweden’s most renowned designers, in a material and technique not commonly associated with his more famous output in brass and textiles.
