Josef Frank bookcase
This rare freestanding bookcase was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1940s. Crafted from mahogany, the bookcase features a symmetrical double-sided design with adjustable shelving, offering versatile options for storage and display. It stands on two solid feet, lending the piece a stable yet visually light presence.
The bookcase is in good vintage condition, showing visible signs of use and a natural patina. The mahogany veneer has aged gracefully, though there are areas of veneer damage on the sides consistent with its age and history. Despite these imperfections, the structure remains sound, and the piece retains its timeless aesthetic.
Josef Frank was a pivotal figure in Scandinavian modernism, renowned for his humanistic design approach. His work with Svenskt Tenn blended classical influences with modern functionality, producing furniture that was both practical and artistically expressive. Svenskt Tenn continues to be recognized for its dedication to quality craftsmanship and innovative design.
This bookcase exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian design principles by harmonizing functionality with refined materials to create an elegant yet utilitarian object. Its freestanding construction allows for flexible use, either as a room divider or positioned against a wall.
The bookcase measures 140 centimeters in width, 28 centimeters in depth, and 141.5 centimeters in height (55.1 x 11 x 55.7 inches).
