Josef Frank bookcases
This rare pair of bookcases, model 2112, designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s, is an exquisite example of mid-century Scandinavian design. Crafted from solid mahogany with a rich natural patina, the bookcases showcase Frank’s philosophy of combining functional storage with elegant, organic forms.
Each unit features an open shelving system with adjustable shelves, framed by softly rounded edges that contribute to an inviting and warm aesthetic. The lower section offers practical storage, with one bookcase including a drawer and the other a cabinet with a mirrored glass door and internal glass shelves—adding depth and a refined display area.
Brass hardware details such as handles and hinges provide a subtle decorative contrast to the mahogany, highlighting the quality of craftsmanship. The design balances practicality and beauty, reflecting Frank’s humanistic approach to modernism.
Dimensions: Each bookcase measures 100 cm in width, 45 cm in depth at the base (25 cm at the shelving), and 221 cm in height (39.3 x 17.7 / 9.8 x 87 inches). The pair is in good vintage condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age, preserving the original finish and structural integrity.
