Josef Frank dining chairs
This is a rare and early set of ten dining chairs, model 695, designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1935. The chairs are constructed in solid mahogany, which presents a deep, warm reddish-brown tone and fine grain. The seats and curved backrests are upholstered in black leather, fastened with decorative brass rivets that run along the edges in a continuous line, characteristic of Frank’s early furniture detailing. The form is gently contoured, with subtly curved back legs and a slightly reclined backrest for improved ergonomics. The legs are joined with horizontal stretchers for added stability. The silhouette remains relatively light and refined, reflecting Frank’s approach to blending classic craftsmanship with modern principles of comfort and proportion.
Josef Frank, an Austrian-born architect and designer, moved to Sweden in the 1930s and became one of the key figures in Swedish modern design. His collaboration with Estrid Ericson at Svenskt Tenn led to a broad range of designs combining Viennese elegance with Scandinavian functionalism. Model 695 is an early example of his Swedish period, with influences from both traditional craftsmanship and modernist simplification.
Svenskt Tenn, the producing firm, was founded in 1924 and became a central institution for Swedish interior and furniture design. Under Ericson’s direction and with Frank’s creative input, it championed a distinctly expressive, humane version of modernism. This set remains in good vintage condition with visible patina and signs of wear consistent with age. The leather has undergone some repairs but retains its original character.
Dimensions for each chair are 48 cm (18.9 inches) in width, 60 cm (23.6 inches) in depth, and 85 cm (33.5 inches) in height, with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches).
