Josef Frank dining table
This rare dining table, model 1020, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies Frank’s unique interpretation of Scandinavian modernism, blending natural materials, traditional craftsmanship, and an organic yet sculptural sensibility.
The circular tabletop is veneered with highly figured walnut root, showcasing complex swirling grain patterns and a rich interplay of warm brown hues with darker mottling. The outer edge of the tabletop features a decorative inlaid checker pattern composed of alternating segments of boxwood and likely ebonized wood, adding a refined graphic detail characteristic of Frank’s decorative approach.
The base consists of four elegantly curved solid wood legs with a warm honey tone, which meet at a central point and splay outward symmetrically. Despite the robust materials, the design achieves a visual sense of lightness and fluidity through the graceful curvature and proportion of the legs.
Josef Frank (1885–1967), originally from Austria, became a leading figure in Swedish modern design after emigrating in the 1930s. His work for Svenskt Tenn is celebrated for its humanistic modernism, favoring natural motifs, vibrant materials, and an eclectic aesthetic that contrasts with the stricter functionalism of his contemporaries.
Svenskt Tenn, founded by Estrid Ericson in 1924, was the exclusive producer of Frank’s furniture and textiles. The company has played a central role in shaping Swedish design identity throughout the 20th century and continues to curate Frank’s designs.
This table represents mid-century Scandinavian design through its emphasis on material richness, elegant proportions, and fine craftsmanship. It stands apart from the minimalist canon of the period with its expressive use of pattern and form.
Dimensions are 143 cm in diameter and 71.5 cm in height (approximately 56.3 by 28.1 inches). The table is in very good vintage condition, with minor wear consistent with age and careful use. The walnut veneer and inlay remain well preserved, and the base shows only slight signs of handling.
