Josef Frank dining table
This is a rare dining table, model 1020, designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1940s. The tabletop is circular and composed of highly figured amboyna root veneer, known for its richly variegated, almost topographical grain pattern. The color is a deep reddish-brown with a dynamic interplay of lighter and darker tones, typical of natural burls. The base structure is made of solid mahogany, shaped into four elegantly curved legs that extend outward in a symmetrical formation, providing both visual balance and structural support.
The table exhibits a combination of organic and modernist influences, characteristic of Josef Frank’s broader design philosophy, which aimed to integrate formality with natural elements. Frank, an Austrian-born architect and designer, was a leading figure in the development of Swedish modern design after emigrating to Sweden in the 1930s. His work with Svenskt Tenn redefined interior aesthetics in mid-century Scandinavia, combining richly patterned materials with humanist modernism. Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, became a key platform for Frank’s vision, blending craftsmanship and artistic freedom with functionality.
The condition of the table is good vintage, showing light signs of use consistent with age, such as minor surface marks and a subtle patina that testifies to its history. The veneer retains its glossy finish and vibrant color, and the structure remains stable and true.
The dimensions of the table are 145 cm in diameter and 72.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 57.1 inches in diameter and 28.5 inches in height.
