Josef Frank trolley
The very rare trolley, model 889, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. This piece exemplifies Frank’s distinctive approach to modern design, merging practicality with decorative richness in a manner that is both refined and enduring. The trolley combines functional clarity with luxurious materiality, reflecting the designer’s commitment to humanistic modernism and his resistance to rigid minimalism.
The structure consists of two tiers, each fitted with rectangular mirrored glass shelves. These shelves are bordered by finely crafted brass frames with perforated detailing that introduces both texture and lightness to the design. The corners of the shelves are gently rounded, softening the overall geometry and enhancing the fluidity of the form. The upper shelf includes a gracefully arched brass handle that curves upward, integrated seamlessly into the frame and contributing to the trolley’s sculptural silhouette.
The support structure is composed entirely of brass, including the legs and wheel mounts, all finished in a warm golden tone that has developed a natural patina over time. The trolley is supported by a large fixed front wheel and two smaller caster wheels at the rear. This asymmetric wheel configuration ensures both visual interest and practical mobility. The blend of curved lines and rectilinear surfaces creates a balanced profile, and the use of mirrored glass enhances the lightness and reflectivity of the piece.
Condition is consistent with vintage use. The brass shows light oxidation and patina, particularly around joints and edges, which adds to the historical character of the trolley. The mirrored glass shelves remain intact, with no cracks or significant surface damage, and retain their reflective clarity.
Josef Frank (1885–1967) was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Swedish design. His work for Svenskt Tenn—an iconic design firm known for its expressive and richly layered interiors—was marked by a resistance to modernist austerity and a preference for organic forms, intricate details, and a sense of visual warmth. Model 889 is a testament to this philosophy, representing a fusion of artistry, craftsmanship, and utility.
The dimensions of the trolley are 90 cm in length, 48.5 cm in width, and 60 cm in height (35.4 x 19.1 x 23.6 inches).
