Kaare Klint & Edvard Kindt-Larsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model 4396, also known as “Mix” was designed by Kaare Klint and Edvard Kindt-Larsen in 1937 and produced by the renowned Danish cabinetmaker Rud. Rasmussen. The chairs exemplify the refined elegance and functional design principles of Scandinavian modernism, combining classic influences with modernist ideals that emerged during the late 1930s.
The chairs feature a solid mahogany frame, with a warm natural patina that has developed over time, adding to the chairs’ authenticity and vintage character. The original leather upholstery is deep reddish-brown, showing natural aging and variations in tone that reflect the quality and history of the piece. The seat and back cushions are fully upholstered in leather, with piping along the edges, ensuring durability while maintaining the chair’s elegant aesthetic. The armrests, gently curved and seamlessly integrated into the structure, transition smoothly into the slightly reclined backrest, providing both comfort and ergonomic support. The legs, crafted from solid mahogany, are connected by cross stretchers that enhance stability while maintaining a light and open visual impression.
Kaare Klint, regarded as the father of Danish modernism, was known for his emphasis on functional design, proportion, and craftsmanship. He often drew from historical furniture forms, refining them to meet modern needs. Edvard Kindt-Larsen, an architect and designer, contributed to the elegant, sophisticated lines of the Mix chair. Their collaboration on this model resulted in a piece that perfectly balances classic influences with the modernist movement.
Rud. Rasmussen, founded in 1869, was one of Denmark’s most esteemed cabinetmakers, known for its high-quality furniture. Their collaboration with Klint and Kindt-Larsen helped elevate the Mix chair to an iconic status.
The Mix chair represents the ideal of Scandinavian modernism, combining traditional craftsmanship with the emerging modernist simplicity. The proportions and form are carefully calculated to provide both aesthetic harmony and functional comfort, making this model highly sought after due to its rarity and historical significance.
