Kaare Klint & Edvard Kindt-Larsen easy chairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs, model 4396 also known as the “Mix” chairs, was designed collaboratively by Kaare Klint and Edvard Kindt-Larsen and produced by Rud. Rasmussen cabinetmakers in Denmark. Designed in 1937, these chairs represent a distinguished moment in the history of Scandinavian furniture design, bridging the classic principles of proportion and ergonomics with a softer, more modern expression.
The chairs feature a warm and rich Cuban mahogany frame, showcasing a deep reddish-brown color with subtle grain patterns. The seating and backrest are upholstered in the original tan leather, which has developed a beautiful, even patina over time, enhancing the natural character of the material. The leather exhibits gentle signs of use, including minor creases and slight discolorations, consistent with age and maintaining an authentic vintage appearance.
The form of the chairs is characterized by gently curved armrests, a softly arched backrest, and a slightly reclining seat angle that ensures both aesthetic elegance and seating comfort. The proportions are well-balanced, with solid square legs joined by stretchers, emphasizing structural integrity and traditional craftsmanship.
Kaare Klint (1888–1954) is often referred to as the father of Danish modernism, recognized for his deep commitment to functionalism, human proportions, and the use of fine natural materials. Edvard Kindt-Larsen (1901–1982), who collaborated with Klint on this project, continued the modern Danish tradition with a focus on refined detailing and modernist simplicity.
Rud. Rasmussen, founded in 1869 in Copenhagen, was one of Denmark’s leading cabinetmakers, producing furniture for many of the most important Danish designers. The firm’s pieces are distinguished by their outstanding craftsmanship, material quality, and adherence to the highest artisanal standards.
