Kaare Klint lounge chair
This very rare folding lounge chair was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Rud Rasmussen in Denmark in 1933. It exemplifies Klint’s mastery of proportion, ergonomics, and material honesty — principles that would come to define Danish functionalism and shape modern Scandinavian design.
Constructed in solid oak with brass fittings, the chair is designed to fold flat for transport or storage, a feature reflecting Klint’s rational approach to furniture conceived for both comfort and practicality. The seat and backrest are handwoven in natural cane, lending lightness and transparency to the structure while ensuring breathability and flexibility.
The frame displays meticulous joinery and refined curves that support the natural posture of the reclining body. The chair’s mechanical precision — visible in the brass pivot points and joinery details — underlines Rud Rasmussen’s craftsmanship and the architect’s technical sensibility.
Designed in 1933, this model embodies the transitional period between traditional cabinetmaking and the emerging modernist movement in Denmark. It represents Klint’s ongoing dialogue with historical furniture types, notably the campaign and deck chairs of the 19th century, distilled here into a modern, architectonic form.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with signs of age and use, including a small area of damage to the cane on the seat. The oak surface presents a warm, even patina, and the brass fittings show age-appropriate oxidation that enhances the chair’s authenticity.
