Information

This freestanding desk, model 70, was designed in 1958 by Danish designer Kai Kristiansen and produced by Feldballes Møbelfabrik in Denmark. Executed in richly grained rosewood, the piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and architectural clarity that defined Kristiansen’s work during the mid-20th century. The floating pedestal design, with drawers suspended beneath the top, emphasizes both functionality and lightness in form, characteristic of Scandinavian modern furniture.

The desk features two drawer units, each with sculpted horizontal handles, a detail that underscores Kristiansen’s attention to tactile surfaces and the interplay of shadow and depth in design. The legs are tapered and connected with structural framing, balancing elegance with stability. The rosewood veneer shows a striking natural figure, with deep brown hues and contrasting lighter tones, enhancing the visual richness of the piece. The rear of the desk is finished, allowing it to be placed freely in a room, further supporting its role as a statement object.

This example is in good vintage condition, with signs of usage and patina consistent with age, reflecting its history without compromising structural integrity. As with much of Kristiansen’s work, the design represents an evolution from traditional craftsmanship toward modern functionalism, blending sculptural lines with practical utility.
