Information

This rare set of flower tables was designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Aksel Kjersgaard in Odder, Denmark, during the 1960s. They exemplify the Danish modern ethos of combining refined materials with precise, geometric design and structural clarity.

Each table features a solid rosewood frame finished with a satin sheen that highlights the striking grain patterns typical of the wood, including warm browns accented by dark streaks and cathedral-like figures. The rectangular forms rest on sleek linear sled bases, lending the pieces a sense of architectural lightness despite the richness of the material. The sharp corners and the seamless transition from vertical supports to lower stretcher showcase the craftsmanship and clean detailing characteristic of Kristiansen’s work.

Within each rosewood frame sits a removable zinc liner, designed to hold plants while protecting the wood from moisture damage. These liners retain their original matte galvanized finish, displaying a subtle, natural patina that speaks to mid-century Danish utilitarian aesthetics. The combination of industrial metal with elegant hardwood exemplifies Scandinavian values of material honesty and functional beauty.

Kai Kristiansen (b. 1929) is renowned for his technically sophisticated furniture designs, often realized through collaborations with skilled manufacturers like Aksel Kjersgaard, known for its fine woodworking and minimalist forms. These flower tables are a distinctive and less common example of Kristiansen’s repertoire, balancing decorative appeal with practical structure.

The set is in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear on the rosewood and natural aging on the zinc liners, with no visible structural damage or repairs.

Dimensions per table: 89 cm wide, 30 cm deep, and 44.5 cm high (approximately 35 x 11.8 x 17.5 inches).
