Kai Kristiansen mirror
This rectangular wall mirror was designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Aksel Kjersgaard in Odder, Denmark, during the 1950s. Executed in solid rosewood, the frame features a refined and minimalist design that is characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics. The wood has a deep reddish-brown tone, with rich, natural grain patterns throughout, which vary from tight, linear lines to more expressive waves, depending on the viewing angle and lighting.
The craftsmanship of the frame is particularly notable for its subtly rounded inner corners and exposed joinery, which includes precision-fit dowels, reflecting a high level of cabinetmaking. The frame’s depth is minimal, at just 2 cm, which allows the mirror to sit closely against the wall, highlighting the sleekness and elegance of the construction.
Aksel Kjersgaard, known for his collaborations with Danish designers, was recognized for his exceptional production quality, and his workshop in Odder produced a variety of pieces marked by clean lines, meticulous joinery, and the use of high-grade hardwoods. Kai Kristiansen, a key figure in the Danish modern movement, is known for his precise and functional designs, often incorporating sculptural and architectural elements within restrained forms.
The condition of the mirror is very good, with the rosewood frame showing only minimal signs of wear and age-appropriate patina. The original mirror glass remains intact and clear. The mirror retains its original manufacturer’s stamp on the back panel, marked with “AKSEL KJERSGAARD, ODDER, MADE IN DENMARK” and the Danish Furnituremakers Control emblem, certifying its verified Danish origin and quality.
The dimensions of the mirror are 59 cm in width, 2 cm in depth, and 104.5 cm in height (approximately 23.23 inches wide, 0.79 inches deep, and 41.14 inches high).
