Kai Kristiansen sideboards
This rare set of four modular sideboards was designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Feldballes Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1958. Constructed from richly grained rosewood, the units exhibit pronounced and highly figured patterns that contribute to their visual depth and material richness. Each sideboard is designed to function either independently or as part of a larger configuration, demonstrating the modular flexibility characteristic of late 1950s Danish furniture design.
The composition includes four distinct cabinets: two with double doors enclosing shelved storage; one with vertical doors concealing a lift-top bar compartment; and one featuring a stack of four drawers with sculpted, integrated handles. The fronts are veneered with carefully matched grain patterns to create a rhythmic and unified façade when arranged side by side. All units rest on tapered solid rosewood legs, providing structural elevation and visual lightness.
The surface condition is very good, with minor wear consistent with age and use, particularly in areas of light handling. The rosewood finish retains its depth and luster, and all internal fittings—including shelves and the bar mechanism—are intact and functional.
Kai Kristiansen (born 1929), trained under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy, is known for his refined modern furniture designs that balance functionalism with precise joinery and sculptural detail. His work rose to prominence during the golden age of Danish modernism. Feldballes Møbelfabrik, a respected Danish cabinetmaker, was known for its high-quality craftsmanship and elegant woodwork, often collaborating with leading designers like Kristiansen.
This set is a significant example of Scandinavian modular storage furniture, offering both a cohesive aesthetic and practical adaptability. The individual units can be reconfigured as a single extended sideboard or used separately, depending on the spatial needs.
Each cabinet measures 85.5 centimeters in width, 45 centimeters in depth, and 71 centimeters in height (approximately 33.7 x 17.7 x 28 inches).
