Kai Winding bureau
This rare bureau or sideboard was designed by Kai Winding and produced by Poul Hundevad Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from rosewood with brass detailing, the piece exemplifies the restrained elegance and material refinement typical of mid-century Scandinavian cabinetmaking.
The case features a rectilinear form elevated on a delicate brass base with diagonally braced stretchers. This slender frame visually lightens the substantial volume of the cabinet and lends architectural clarity to the design. The cabinet consists of two symmetrical columns, each housing five drawers. The drawer fronts have integrated recessed handles, with the top drawers equipped with locks. The rosewood veneer displays highly figured and expressive grain patterns across the entire façade, enhancing the piece’s richness and visual coherence.
The condition is very good, with a light patina on the brass and minor surface wear consistent with age on the wood. The brass legs remain structurally sound, and the drawers operate smoothly. The rosewood finish retains its warmth and vibrancy.
Kai Winding’s work for Poul Hundevad represents a lesser-known but finely crafted chapter in Danish design, marked by modular proportions and thoughtful material selection. Poul Hundevad, based in Vamdrup, Denmark, was active during the mid-century and known for versatile storage solutions and understated modern furniture grounded in strong woodworking traditions.
This sideboard exemplifies Scandinavian modernism’s harmonious blend of clean form, functional detailing, and rich natural materials. Its scale and configuration make it suitable for use as a bureau, sideboard, or storage chest.
The dimensions are 110 centimeters wide, 40.5 centimeters deep, and 77 centimeters high (approximately 43.3 x 15.9 x 30.3 inches).
