Kai Winding bureau
This rare bureau was designed by Kai Winding and produced by P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. Executed in rosewood with brass details, the piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and material quality associated with Danish mid-century furniture. The design combines functional precision with aesthetic balance, displaying Winding’s mastery of proportion and architectural form.
The front is composed of multiple drawers of varying sizes, creating a rhythmic and sculptural facade. Each drawer features elegantly integrated recessed handles and brass keyholes, adding subtle contrast to the richly grained rosewood. The vertical and horizontal alignment of drawers enhances the sense of order and symmetry, while the lower tapered legs provide lightness to the overall structure. The interior drawers are lined with green felt, a detail emphasizing the craftsmanship and care in finish typical of Jeppesens’ production.
Kai Winding’s work reflects the modernist principles of postwar Danish design, with a focus on clean lines, functional clarity, and honest materials. P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik, known for collaborations with prominent designers such as Hans J. Wegner and Ib Kofod-Larsen, was among the leading Danish cabinetmakers in producing furniture of exceptional precision and durability. This bureau was retailed by Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen, a hallmark of quality and an important distributor of Danish modern design internationally.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with small signs of age and usage. The rosewood displays a deep, even patina that highlights the natural figure of the wood.
