Information

This rare set of nine mouth-blown glass bowls, designed by Kaj Franck and produced by Nuutajärvi Notsjö in Finland during the 1950s, embodies the designer’s conviction that everyday objects should marry utility with sculptural clarity. Each bowl is formed from warm amber-toned glass, the color achieved through a controlled addition of metal oxides, resulting in a rich yet restrained hue that remains consistent across the set while exhibiting the subtle tonal shifts characteristic of hand-blown production.

The profile of each bowl is distinctly modernist: a deep circular basin rises to a dramatically slanted rim, imparting a dynamic sense of motion even at rest. The walls are slightly thickened toward the base, where the glass is poured and annealed, providing stability and a pleasing weight that rests solidly in the hand. Within the body, a swirling optic pattern—produced by the rhythmic movement of the glassblower’s tool during formation—creates a textured interplay of light and shadow, enhancing both aesthetic interest and functional grip.

Kaj Franck (1911–1989) was a pivotal figure in Finnish design, advocating for the “less but better” ethos and emphasizing democratic access to well-crafted objects. These bowls reflect Franck’s philosophy: they are versatile enough for everyday use—whether serving simple fare or displaying decorative arrangements—yet possess the refined proportions and thoughtful detailing that elevate them to objects of quiet beauty. The minimalist form avoids superfluous embellishment, focusing instead on the essential dialogue between form, material, and light.

Nuutajärvi, established in 1793, was Finland’s oldest continuously operating glassworks and played a central role in the development of modern Finnish glass during the 20th century. Under Franck’s guidance and that of other leading designers, Nuutajärvi combined artisanal techniques with industrial processes to achieve high standards of clarity, color, and consistency. Each bowl in this set retains its original paper label, bearing the “Nuutajärvi Notsjö” mark, further attesting to its provenance and period authenticity.

Measuring 13.5 cm in diameter and 5 cm in height (approximately 5.3 × 2 inches), these bowls are in excellent vintage condition, with only minimal surface wear and light signs of handling. No cracks or chips are evident, and the optic patterns remain sharp. Together, they form a cohesive ensemble that exemplifies the enduring elegance and functional integrity of mid-century Finnish glass design.
