Kaj Franck vases
This rare set of five glass vases was designed by Kaj Franck and produced by Nuutajärvi in Finland during the 1950s. Each vase is crafted from vibrant blue glass in a cylindrical form, featuring clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic that embodies Franck’s commitment to functionalism. The simplicity and clarity of the forms prioritize utility and visual balance, while the transparency of the glass creates a layered effect when the vases are displayed together, highlighting the interaction of light and depth within the material.
Kaj Franck, often described as the “conscience of Finnish design,” was a pivotal figure in Scandinavian modernism. His work emphasized democratic principles, practical usability, and refined aesthetics. Collaborating extensively with Nuutajärvi, one of Finland’s oldest and most esteemed glass manufacturers, Franck helped shape the identity of Finnish glass design. His philosophy rejected unnecessary decoration, focusing instead on proportion, balance, and the inherent qualities of materials. This set of vases reflects those ideals, remaining timeless in both form and function.
The set is in excellent condition, showing no chips or cracks. The glass maintains its original clarity and vibrant coloration, with subtle variations in hue that contribute to the visual depth of the group. The largest vase measures approximately 19 centimeters in diameter and 17 centimeters in height, or 7.5 by 6.7 inches, while the smallest is 14 centimeters in diameter and 12 centimeters in height, equivalent to 5.5 by 4.7 inches.
