Kay Bojesen doll’s pram

An exceptionally rare doll’s pram designed by Kay Bojesen and produced by R. Wengler in Denmark during the 1930s. Crafted entirely in rattan and fitted with white rubber wheels, the piece brings together two important names in Danish design and craftsmanship. Measuring 36 cm wide, 77 cm deep, and 68.5 cm high (14.2 x 30.3 x 27 inches), it is a remarkable surviving example of early Danish modern design for children.

The pram is characterized by its sculptural, sweeping silhouette, formed from carefully bent lengths of rattan. The open construction follows the curved profile of a traditional pram while giving it an unusually light and expressive appearance. Fine bindings secure the individual elements throughout, demonstrating the highly specialized rattan craftsmanship for which R. Wengler’s workshop was renowned.

Particularly distinctive is the long arched handle, which continues naturally from the woven body and reinforces the fluid character of the design. Four white rubber wheels provide a striking contrast to the warm honey-colored rattan, while their simple spoked construction complements the delicacy of the frame.

The model was exhibited at Den Permanente in Denmark in 1938, placing it within an important period in the development of Danish design. Although Kay Bojesen is internationally celebrated for his wooden animals and playful objects, his broader work embraced functional objects for both adults and children. This rare pram reflects the same combination of practicality, warmth, and playful simplicity associated with his work.

The pram remains in good vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with its age. The rattan has developed a warm natural patina, while the surviving bindings, wheels, and gracefully curved construction give the piece considerable historical character. Both a charming functional object and a highly collectible example of pre-war Danish design.
