Sylvia Stave jar
The spherical body is composed of two hemispherical sections resting on a small circular foot. Closely spaced horizontal grooves extend across the entire surface, creating a continuous rhythmic pattern that emphasizes the rounded silhouette. The lid is topped with an elegant, elongated female figure with outstretched arms resting on two symmetrical, upward-curving elements. The contrast between the strict geometry of the vessel and the delicate figurative finial gives the piece a distinctive sculptural character. The pewter has a softly reflective silver-grey surface, with subtle variations in tone that highlight its form and decorative detailing.
Sylvia Stave (1908–1994) was a Swedish designer known for her innovative metalwork created for C.G. Hallberg during the late 1920s and 1930s. Her designs are particularly associated with the Swedish Grace and Art Deco movements, combining simplified geometric forms with refined proportions and occasionally playful sculptural details. Stave’s work represents an important contribution to early modern Swedish decorative arts, and her surviving designs are appreciated for their originality and distinctive aesthetic.
C.G. Hallberg was one of Sweden’s established manufacturers of silverware and decorative metal objects. Founded in Stockholm in 1860, the company became known for its craftsmanship and its collaborations with contemporary designers. During the interwar period, Hallberg produced a range of objects reflecting the development of Swedish modern design, including pieces by Sylvia Stave that combined traditional metalworking techniques with new artistic expressions.
The underside is stamped with the C.G. Hallberg manufacturer’s mark, Swedish pewter markings, and the date code C8, corresponding to 1929. The top of the lid also features an engraved inscription near the base of the figurative finial.
The jar remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use. Light surface scratches, small marks, and natural patina are visible throughout. The original lid and sculptural finial are present, and the engraved horizontal decoration remains well defined.
