Knud Færch cowhorn armchairs
This rare pair of chairs, model SM 521, also known as the Cowhorn Chair, was designed by Knud Færch and produced by Slagelse Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1969. The chairs are crafted from solid teak with seats upholstered in natural leather, combining organic form with refined Danish craftsmanship.
The design is characterized by its sculptural, flowing armrests that extend seamlessly from the backrest, resembling the natural curvature of a cow’s horns—hence the name. The rounded and tapered backrest provides both aesthetic grace and ergonomic support, while the frame’s joints and transitions are executed with precision, emphasizing the craftsmanship that defined Danish furniture of the mid-20th century. The seat, covered in warm, natural leather, adds tactile contrast to the smooth wooden surfaces, and the visible wear and patina enhance the authenticity and charm of the piece.
Knud Færch (1924–1992) was known for his sculptural approach to furniture, creating forms that combined human-centered comfort with an architectural sense of proportion. The SM 521 chair exemplifies his focus on material honesty and organic structure, placing it among the icons of Scandinavian modernism.
The chairs are in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and use consistent with their period, including a beautiful patina on both the teak and leather surfaces. These elements underline their originality and the natural aging of high-quality materials.
