Knud Færch
Knud Færch (1924–1992) was a Danish furniture designer recognised for his ability to combine sculptural form with a strong emphasis on comfort and material sensitivity. His work reflects a close relationship with wood as a living material, shaped with both technical precision and an intuitive understanding of form.
Biography
Færch developed an early interest in furniture through his upbringing, where craftsmanship and woodworking played a central role. He later studied interior design, and a formative encounter with Finn Juhl had a lasting influence on his approach to furniture, particularly in his understanding of organic form and the relationship between object and user.
Active primarily during the 1950s and 1960s, Færch focused extensively on chair design, treating the chair as both a functional object and a sculptural element within a space. His work is characterized by softly shaped forms, careful proportions, and a commitment to ergonomic comfort.
Working predominantly in wood, Færch created designs that balance structural clarity with a sense of warmth and tactility. His furniture embodies key principles of Danish modernism—craftsmanship, material honesty, and a refined simplicity—while maintaining a distinct sculptural presence.
