Knud Vodder bar stools
This exceptionally rare pair of bar stools, model KV 58, was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Knud Vodder in 1958. Crafted by renowned cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, these stools embody the refined Scandinavian modernist aesthetic, characterized by sculptural form, meticulous craftsmanship, and a restrained material palette.
The stools are constructed with four tapered legs in black-lacquered wood, giving them a visually lightweight appearance while maintaining structural integrity. A brass footrest connects the legs in a rectilinear arrangement, providing both stability and a contrast of materials that highlights the sophisticated design. The seat is upholstered in black leather, which is molded and extends into a gently curved, wraparound backrest that cradles the sitter. The interplay of leather, lacquered wood, and brass, with its combination of matte and reflective textures, creates a harmonious visual and tactile effect.
Knud Vodder, a prominent figure in the Danish modern movement, is renowned for his human-centered designs, which often feature fine materials and subtle detailing. Trained under Finn Juhl, Vodder’s work shares a similar sensitivity to form and proportion. His collaboration with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder—known for their high-end, handcrafted furniture—produced a number of celebrated pieces during the 1950s and 60s, many of which were created in small quantities for exclusive commissions.
The KV 58 bar stools are a particularly rare example of Vodder’s work, blending sleek lines and mid-century modernist ideals with an elevated level of craftsmanship. They reflect the Danish modern movement’s focus on clarity, functionality, and an emphasis on artisanal integrity and material richness, a hallmark of the Danish cabinetmaker tradition.
Each stool measures 46 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 100 cm in height (approximately 18.1 inches wide, 19.3 inches deep, and 39.4 inches high), with a seat height of 84 cm (33.1 inches), making them suitable for bar or counter-height installations.
The condition of the stools is excellent, with only minor patina on the brass and subtle signs of wear on the leather, consistent with careful use. The construction remains firm, and the finishes are well-preserved, making this pair a highly collectible example of Scandinavian furniture design.
