Kurt Østervig easy chair

This is the model 12 easy chair designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by Schillers Polstermøbelfabrik in Denmark in 1961. The chair is very rare and this is the largest version.

The frame is constructed from solid teak, with the legs slightly splayed outward to provide both visual dynamism and structural stability. The frame supports a generous, fully upholstered shell that curves outward at the arms and back, enveloping the sitter in a form that suggests both openness and support. The upholstery is a dark grey wool fabric, which complements the warm reddish tones of the teak legs. The fabric texture is tightly woven, providing a subtle depth to the dark coloration.

The silhouette of the chair exhibits Østervig’s signature attention to line and proportion, with gently sloped armrests integrated into the overall form and a soft, rounded back that culminates in a shallow crest at the top. The seating angle and proportions are designed for comfort, with a wide seat and ergonomic reclining back. This particular example shows some signs of usage, notably on the fabric, which has light wear and patina consistent with careful use and the chair’s vintage status. The teak wood retains a strong, even color and a smooth finish.

Kurt Østervig (1912–1986) was a Danish designer trained as a shipbuilder before becoming a furniture designer. His background in precision construction is evident in the structural clarity and thoughtful detailing of his works. Østervig’s designs are marked by a balance between bold form and functionalism, often featuring innovative use of timber and upholstery.
